New ground has been broken at the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) with its Football Section's introduction of four sponsors for the upcoming season.

In main sponsor Era Realty Network Pte Ltd and co-sponsor Evo Lines (S) Pte Ltd it has secured funding not only for its National Football League (NFL) team, which also competes in the Singapore Pools FA Cup, but its Cosmo League sides and junior sides, plus the SCC teams participating in three major regional Seven-a-side tournaments, beginning with the Citibank Hong Kong 7s (18-20 May).

Sub-sponsors P.O.D. Bistro Pte Ltd, who operate an iconic sports bar in Siglap and Japanese restaurant operators Iza Pte Ltd, who have Your Local Izakaya Bar, also in Siglap, will be getting behind the NFL and Singapore Pools FA Cup team for the 2018 season.

A four-man Sponsorship group had secured the deal on behalf of the SCC football teams.

The sponsorship deal was announced at a luncheon in Stumps, the bar overlooking the Padang. Shirts bearing the sponsors' names were presented to representatives of the four sponsors by the respective captains and team managers.

Among the guests at the luncheon organised to announce the sponsorship were FAS president Lim Kia Tong and representatives from the teams, their coaches, captains and managers.

Also present was SCC president Sher Bajit Singh, who confessed to playing most sports catered for at SCC when Unofficial Podcast spoke to him, "except rugby union" he admitted, though cricket, tennis and hockey were among his regular pursuits, he said. SCC Football Section Convenor Jonathan Knapp was another key figure at the event.

The Road Ahead

The SCC team kick off their NFL Division 2 season this coming Saturday, 12th May, against Admiralty CSC at 7.30pm.

In the semi-professional NFL the SCC has had tougher competition over the years but has won Division 1 once in 2009 and Division 2 twice, in 2008 and 2015. They were also Singapore Pools FA Cup winners in 2009.

The NFL Division 2 team faces a strong challenge in its bid for promotion with several ambitious sides vying for the top two spots which will ensure a return to the NFL top flight.

New coaching team of R. Sasikumar and Amos Boon, who were also in the group responsible for securing the groundbreaking sponsorship, are hopeful of a successful season.

Boon was keen to point out that the NFL team, while ambitious, has no plans to go professional and the overriding concern is to instill the values of sportsmanship and good character in its players, to foster camaraderie and sound discipline, in keeping with the SCC club's traditions of fair play and hard work.
