11 June 2017: The Football Association of Singapore announced today that the Under-22 National Team will be traveling to Doha, Qatar for a training camp in view of the upcoming Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 Championship qualifiers in July and Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in August.
The Young Lions are scheduled to play the Qatar Under-22 National Team in two matches on 15th and 17th June respectively. As the matches will be played at 8:30pm local time, the kick-off timing based on Singapore's time zone (GMT +8) will fall on 1:30am on 16th and 18th June.
Head Coach of Under-22 National Team Richard Tardy was relishing the opportunity to play against the Qataris: “Playing strong teams like Qatar will allow us to better gauge our abilities in the lead-up to our important tournaments in the coming months – in fact, they reached the semi-finals of the AFC Under-23 Championships last year. If not for conceding late goals to South Korea in the semi-final and Iraq in the third placing match, they would have been one of the three Asian teams in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil."
“Having said that, we do have players like Irfan Fandi and Hami Syahin who have been training with the National Team – I am sure that they will be able to add valuable experience to the squad, and that our boys will do their best to hold their own against such tough opponents.” he added.
The Young Lions travelled to the United Arab Emirates to participate in the Dubai Cup earlier this year where they lost all four matches and managed to score only one goal in the entire tournament. Following that, they had three friendly matches against the Vanuatu Under-20s, drawing two and winning one of those games.
The matches against Qatar in this training camp should be the last friendlies the Young Lions play before they kick-off their AFC Under-23 Championship qualification journey against Group F hosts Myanmar on 19th July 2017.
