NFL Division Two side Warwick Knights hosted a dinner last Wednesday at Sinaran Seafood to thank their sponsors. The dinner was also of special significance as the Muslim members of the Knights would start their fasting month on Saturday.

The Knights are currently in third position behind South Avenue and Kembangan United and the club's leading scorer, Akhbar Ali, has already notched three goals to his name, lifting him to a joint-second position in the scoring charts alongside Khairulnizam Jumahat (South Avenue), Shahrul Nizam Mazlan (Kembangan United) and Asnol As’at (Starlight Soccerites).

Warwick Knights drew their first game against Kembangan with a last-gasp equalizer through Akhbar while they clinched a convincing win over Starlight Soccerites last weekend which saw former Woodlands Wellington midfielder Armanizam Dolah scoring with a deft volley.

The Knights boast an exciting squad this year with the likes of Akhbar, custodian Arif Agus and former S.League players Ridhwan Osman, Hilmi Azman and Armanizam. Warwick are also helmed by former Etoile coach Patrick Vallee, although the Frenchman is currently back in his native France until July. Assistant coach Nas Nasta'in currently holds the reins in Vallee's absence.

The Knights are kitted by Thai sportswear company Eureka while they are backed are A4 International and their main sponsor Ms. Ina Sultan. A4 International and Ina Sultan are a facility & maintenance company and a realtor respectively.

Both sponsors mingled with the club's players and staff during the hour long dinner and the place was in an upbeat mood with plenty of laughter.

For Andrew Lioe, who is the Managing Director of A4 International, it didn't take him long to decide to come on board as a sponsor for Warwick: "I like football and I play football myself. I hope that by sponsoring Warwick, I'll be doing my part for local football. I see a lot of passion in the club's chairman (Nazuwan Samad) and coaches, and hopefully this would be transmitted on to the players. I also hope that Warwick can contribute back to our football society by raising good players for the future."

Ina Sultan, who is into her second year of sponsorship with the Knights, cited the professionalism displayed by the club management as one of the reasons which made her decide to extend her sponsorship.  "I sponsored the team last year and I feel that while they are still a growing team, the management is very serious in bringing themselves to the next level. I believe that they have the potential to go far. In addition, my husband and son are both ardent football fans and I wanted to contribute to a sport which they would both be interested in, and now supporting the Knights has become a family activity for us."

As a backer of three local football teams, Ina also had a virtuous reason for doing so."I think football is a sport played by many children and youths. Unfortunately a lot of the current young generation might stray and partake in delinquent activities. By contributing to the sport, I hope that more youngsters would take up football as a sport and enjoy it as a healthy activity to keep themselves occupied during their leisure hours. I also hope that this widens our future national pool by grooming more talented young players, enabling us to progress on the international stage with better players."

The Knights were in a fantastic mood.

Warwick Knights have repaid the faith show in them so far by remaining unbeaten and Vallee's return later this year would only serve to boost their star-studded squad as they look to gain promotion to Division One.

The Knights will play their next game against Jungfrau Punggol on 10th June and the match will be held at Bukit Gombak Stadium. In view of the fasting month, the match will kick off at 8pm.
