Selvaraj Resigns As Head Coach Of Garena Young Lions

17 May 2017: Garena Young Lions Head Coach V. Selvaraj has resigned from his position, citing family reasons as the rationale behind his resignation. With the position vacant, National Youth Teams Head Coach Richard Tardy will take over the hot seat as coach of the Young Lions until the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in August.
"It has been an honour to be part of the FAS setup and I greatly appreciate the various opportunities given to me, including the appointment as Head Coach of the Garena Young Lions – a very young but talented team. Our boys have done very well over the past few months and have been unlucky not to have secured better results against the professional teams in the league."
"As much as I really enjoy working with the FAS management, technical colleagues including (Technical Director) Michel Sablon, Coach Richard Tardy and other backroom staff, as well as this team of young boys, I have decided, after much consideration, to step down due to family reasons. With the continued support of the FAS and our stakeholders, I am confident that Richard will lead this team to greater heights.” said the 48 year old.
The former Singapore international added, “I would like to thank the FAS Executive Committee and Council Members for their trust in me, as well as the opportunities given to me throughout my employment at the FAS. I am also grateful to the FAS management and my colleagues across all departments for their excellent support. I wish the FAS, including the GYL and SEA Games team, all the best.”
Under Selvaraj's tutelage, the Garena Young Lions have only gained one point in the S.League after a eking out a hard-earned draw with Brunei DPMM FC in their last match while conceding a whopping 21 goals - more than any other team in the league - so far.
Tardy, who was appointed by FAS technical director Michel Sablon in 2015 as the National Youth Teams Head Coach, had nothing but good words for Selvaraj. “We are saddened by Selvaraj’s decision to step down from his position but we respect his decision – especially in view of his reasons. He has been a good colleague, both on and off the field, and I personally hope that he will make a return to the coaching fraternity soon."
"Selvaraj and the GYL backroom setup have done a good job in preparing our boys for the upcoming SEA Games competition and going forward, I will work closely with the rest of the coaching staff as we embark on the final phase of our ongoing preparations for the biennial competition.” said the Frenchman.
The Football Association of Singapore has announced that it will commence a search for a new permanent Head Coach for the Garena Young Lions and that a further announcement would be made in due course.
Sevaraj's resignation comes just six months after he took over previous Head Coach Patrick Hesse, who also resigned before the end of his term after leading the Young Lions to a bottom finish at the end of the 2016 S.League season with just 9 points from 24 games, winning twice, drawing thrice and losing their remaining matches.
